From HOLY SMOKE: THE BIG BOOK OF NORTH CAROLINA BARBECUE: "In 1766 North Carolinians were getting restive under highhanded British rule. As a gesture of good will, Royal Governor Tryon laid on a barbecue in Wilmington for the New Hanover militia, but the local Sons of Liberty poured out the beer and threw the barbecued ox in the river. This was not an early expression of North Carolinians’ preference for pork: the patriots were upset about the Stamp Act. (By the way, the Wilmington Barbecue took place a full seven years before the Boston Tea Party, which gets all the publicity.)"
